thousands join climate march in portland
Several dozen First Unitarian members gathered on the First Unitarian Church steps to take part in the global People's Climate March on Sunday, Sept. 21. Ranks swelled as they walked toward the waterfront, where they joined several thousand others to urge government, corporate and social action to curb human contribution to climate change. Gov. John Kitzhaber was among those who addressed the demonstrators before they set off along the waterfront in a joyous celebration of Earth.
The Portland celebration was a small but boisterous echo of a rally that drew as many as 400,000 people to New York City on the eve of a United Nations summit on climate change. Other demonstrations were held in more than 1,500 cities around the globe on what organizers hoped would prove a watershed.
The Rev. Kate Lore led a delegation from First Unitarian to the march. See more photos. And watch her Vimeo on her participation on the New York journey.
The march coincided with news that the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, which was built on oil revenues, was divesting its fossil fuel holdings. The Unitarian Universalist Association in June adopted a similar policy.
